Significance of Body Mass Index
Though there have been many ideas and debates between scientists all over the world about the ideal BMI value and its exact definitions but the WHO and CDC current standards indicate according to which the perfect BMI value should be somewhere between 18.6 or 24.9. Anything beyond 30 is considered to be obese. Anything below 18 and you're in the category of being underweight. So if your BMI goes above 30, or even before then it's an excellent time to rethinking your diet.
In the past, there was no unanimity on opinions about differences between BMI values in men and women. Researchers who aren't content with the WHO and CDC's roundabout figure stick to the idea that in the instance of women , the obesity threshold should be 33. They argue that women generally have greater body mass than men. However, what they do not realize is that BMI is not solely aimed at assessing the physical appearance. A scientific study has proven that health risks are equally high in women and men who are above the value 25 kg/m3, hence strengthening the claims of WHO and CDC.
The Calculation and Relevance of BMI
To calculate for the Body Mass Index, we divide the weight of the person, expressed in kilograms, by the square of his size in meters.
Therefore BMI = Weight (kg) / [Height (m)] 2
